How to have two OS's on one computer?

I saw someone with 2 OS's on a mac and my uncle said i can do it on a windows pc, I have a XPS 17 with windows 7 home premium 64 bit and i would like to put windows XP on it also, i know you need a virtual hard drive but i dont know how it works. (programs needed, poss. tutorials)
